Chlorinated hemoglobin
Imidazole is a five-membered heterocyclic compound found in many natural compounds. It exhibits both acidic and basic properties. It has been reported to be an inhibitor of thrombosis. Imidazole is slightly more basic than pyrazole and can form stable salts, such as bitartrate and nitrate. One application of imidazole is in immobilized metal affinity chromatography (IMAC) for the purification of His-tagged proteins. The tagged proteins bind to nickel ion media within the pores of the chromatographic column, and excess imidazole is used to elute the nickel-coordinated tagged proteins from the column, yielding highly pure target proteins. It is especially suitable for buffers in the pH range of 6.2 to 7.8.
