X-α-gal is a chromogenic substrate for yeast galactosidase (MEL1), used for directly detecting yeast two-hybrid interactions of the GAL4 system on agar plates. Positive blue clones can be quickly and easily identified through blue-white color screening, without the time-consuming β-galactosidase reporter gene assay.
