![]() Aureobasidin A (AbA) is a cyclic depsipeptide antibiotic isolated from the filamentous fungus Aureobasidium pullulans No. R106, and it possesses strong antifungal activity. At relatively low concentrations (0.1-0.5 μg/ml), it can be toxic to yeast. Fungal species that are sensitive to it include Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, Candida glabrata, Aspergillus nidulans, and Aspergillus niger. Its mechanism of action lies in the inhibition of inositol phosphorylceramide (IPC) synthase, an enzyme essential for fungal growth, thereby disrupting sphingolipid synthesis and ultimately killing the strains. Genes encoding IPC synthase that have been extensively studied include the AUR1 gene from Saccharomyces cerevisiae and the AURA gene from Aspergillus nidulans, both of which are homologous. Mutations in these genes can confer resistance to AbA in fungal strains, such as the AUR1-C gene.
