Rifampicin is a semi-synthetic compound derived from Amycolatopsis rifamycinica and is an effective broad-spectrum antibiotic. Rifampicin can bind strongly to DNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RNAP) and inhibit RNAP activity, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis in host bacteria. Rifampicin can also be used to treat tuberculosis, effectively inhibiting intracellular pathogens such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium leprae.
