Chloramphenicol B storage solution (50mg/mL sterile)

Hygromycin B is an aminoglycoside antibiotic produced through the metabolism of Streptomyces hygroscopicus. It inhibits protein synthesis by interfering with the translocation of 70S ribosomes and inducing misreading of the mRNA template, thereby killing prokaryotic cells (such as bacteria), eukaryotic cells (such as yeast and fungi), plant cells, and mammalian eukaryotic cells. The hygromycin resistance gene (hyg or hph) derived from Escherichia coli encodes hygromycin B phosphotransferase, which converts hygromycin B into a biologically inactive phosphorylated product, thereby detoxifying it. Based on this principle, hygromycin B is used to select and maintain prokaryotic or eukaryotic cells that have successfully been transfected with a hygromycin resistance gene. Additionally, due to differences in its mode of action, hygromycin B is often used in combination with G418 (Geneticin™), Zeocin™, and Blasticidin S for selecting dual-resistant positive cell lines. Since hygromycin B selectively permeates cells with increased permeability caused by viral infection and inhibits translation, it can also be used as an antiviral agent. Moreover, it can be incorporated into animal feed to serve as an anthelmintic.
