DMSO
![]() Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a sulfur-containing organic compound with the molecular formula C2H6OS. At room temperature, it is a colorless, odorless transparent liquid and is a hygroscopic and combustible liquid. It has properties of high polarity, high boiling point, good thermal stability, non-protonic, and miscibility with water. It can dissolve most organic substances such as ethanol, propanol, benzene, and chloroform, and is known as a "universal solvent." When heated in the presence of acid, it produces small amounts of methyl mercaptan, formaldehyde, dimethyl sulfide, and methylsulfonic acid compounds. It decomposes at high temperatures and reacts violently with chlorine, and burns with a pale blue flame in air. It can be used as an organic solvent, reaction medium, and organic synthesis intermediate. It can also be used as a dyeing solvent for synthetic fibers, a decolorizing agent, a dye carrier, and as an absorbent for recovering acetylene and sulfur dioxide.
