Ampicillin sodium
Ampicillin, also known as ampicillin sodium, is a β-lactam antibiotic and a member of the penicillin family. It is also susceptible to β-lactamase, which can cleave the β-lactam ring of ampicillin. Ampicillin has broad-spectrum inhibition of Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, and anaerobic bacteria. Its antibacterial mechanism involves interfering with the activity of penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). PBPs participate in the final step of peptidoglycan synthesis, catalyzing the formation of pentaglycine cross-links between alanine and lysine residues. These cross-links maintain the integrity of the cell wall and support normal bacterial growth. In addition, ampicillin has bactericidal activity only against actively growing Escherichia coli.
