MSM Medium

MSM medium, or minimal salt medium, is a specialized medium for microbial metabolism research and functional screening. It provides basic nutrition through simple inorganic components, containing phosphates, magnesium salts, and other substances to regulate osmotic pressure and pH. When combined with specific carbon sources (such as glucose), it meets the growth requirements of microorganisms, with nitrogen sources added as needed or omitted. Its primary use is to investigate microorganisms' ability to degrade specific substrates and their nitrogen utilization characteristics. It is widely applied in environmental microbiology (such as screening for degradative microbes) and microbial physiology studies, requiring strict sterile handling to ensure experimental accuracy.
