Kanamycin sulfate
Kanamycin sulfate is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that inhibits Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as mycoplasma. Its mechanism of action involves targeting and binding to the bacterial 70S ribosomal subunit, thereby inhibiting ribosomal translocation and causing misreading, which further interferes with protein synthesis. Kanamycin sulfate can be used in cell culture to prevent bacterial contamination. In molecular biology research, it is commonly used to selectively screen bacteria clones that have successfully taken up the kanamycin resistance gene (kan gene); it is also frequently used in Agrobacterium-mediated transformation experiments to selectively screen plant tissues carrying the nptII (APH3) gene.
