Rifampicin
Rifampicin is a semi-synthetic compound obtained from Amycolatopsis rifamycinica and is an effective broad-spectrum antibiotic. Rifampicin can bind strongly to DNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RNAP) and inhibit its activity, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis in host bacteria. Rifampicin can also be used to treat tuberculosis, effectively inhibiting intracellular pathogens such as mycobacteria M. tuberculosis and M. leprae. To avoid drug resistance, rifampicin should be used in combination with other antibiotics.
