Spectacular Mycin
Spectinomycin hydrochloride, an aminocyclitol antibiotic, has a strong inhibitory effect on both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Its antibacterial mechanism is that it can bind to the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes and inhibit protein synthesis and elongation by interfering with the translocation of peptidyl-tRNA. Mutations in the ribosomal protein 5S gene rpsE (ribosomal protein S5 gene) can prevent the binding of spectinomycin hydrochloride, resulting in resistance to this antibiotic. In cell cultures, spectinomycin hydrochloride can be used as an antibacterial agent or as a selection agent for screening resistant E. coli or plant cells.
