Antimycin A, a metabolite isolated from Streptomyces sp., is a mixture composed of four isomers: Antimycin A1, A2, A3, and A4. It is the first known and most potent inhibitor of the mitochondrial respiratory chain, binding to the quinone reduction site of the cytochrome bc1 complex (i.e., cytochrome reductase) and specifically blocking electron transport between cytochrome b and c1, thereby inhibiting oxidative phosphorylation and ATP synthesis.
