NFB Medium

NFB medium, also known as nitrogen-free medium, does not contain any combined nitrogen sources but includes a carbon source, inorganic salts, and other basic nutrients. It can be prepared in either solid or liquid form according to requirements. Its primary function is to screen and enrich nitrogen-fixing microorganisms (such as free-living nitrogen-fixing bacteria and associative nitrogen-fixing bacteria), allowing only those capable of utilizing atmospheric nitrogen to grow. It is commonly used for the isolation and purification of nitrogen-fixing bacteria and related functional studies. Strict sterile procedures must be followed during use to ensure reliable results.
