Sodium chloride is very important for life on Earth, as most biological tissues contain various salts. Water containing 0.9% sodium chloride is called physiological saline because it has the same osmotic pressure as plasma. Physiological saline is a primary fluid substitute, widely used to treat and prevent dehydration, and is also used for intravenous therapy and the prevention of hypovolemic shock.
