MEE broth

MEE broth (Molybdate EE Broth) is a selective enrichment medium for hygienic detection of water quality, especially for intestinal flora in water, such as Escherichia coli and fecal coliform. Molybdate, the key component, can inhibit the growth of non-target bacteria, while lactose provides fermentation substrate for target bacteria. Gas-producing bacteria decompose lactose to produce acid and gas, which leads to the change of pH of culture medium and makes bromocresol purple indicator color (usually from purple to yellow). This culture medium is mainly used for the estimation test of multi-tube fermentation method, and it is one of the classic methods in environmental water quality monitoring.
