Chinese blue agar
Chinese blue agar is a weak selective identification medium, which is mainly used for the separation of intestinal pathogenic bacteria (such as Salmonella and Shigella). Its selectivity comes from rosolic acid and bile salts, which can inhibit the growth of Gram-positive bacteria. Lactose is used as fermentable carbon source and neutral red is used as pH indicator. Lactose-fermenting bacteria (such as Escherichia coli) produce acid and form red or pink colonies; Pathogens that do not ferment lactose form colorless or yellowish translucent colonies. Chinese blue and rosolic acid inhibit mixed bacteria together, which is a common culture medium for primary screening of fecal specimens.
