Enterobacter cloacae isolation agar (ECIA)
Enterobacter cloacae isolation agar (ECIA)
Enterobacter cloacae isolation agar (ECIA) is a highly selective identification medium, which is specially used to isolate and preliminarily identify Enterobacter cloacae from clinical or environmental samples. Its selectivity mainly depends on high concentration of sodium deoxycholate, which can effectively inhibit non-target gram-positive bacteria and some gram-negative bacteria. The key identification characteristic of this medium is that Enterobacter cloacae can use citrate as the only carbon source and decompose inositol in agar to produce acid. Under this action, a unique yellow halo is formed around the colony due to the decrease of pH value. Therefore, the typical Enterobacter cloacae appears as a pink colony with obvious yellow halo on ECIA.
