BDS medium

BDS medium, namely bile salt deoxycholate agar, is a highly selective separation medium, which is mainly used for the separation of diarrhea-causing intestinal pathogens (especially typhoid, paratyphoid and other salmonella). Its high selectivity comes from bile salts and sodium deoxycholate, which can strongly inhibit the growth of gram-positive bacteria and coliform bacteria. Salmonella usually forms colorless and translucent colonies with black spots in the center (due to the production of hydrogen sulfide), while some strains that do not produce HS are colorless and transparent. This culture medium is suitable for screening Salmonella in contaminated samples such as feces, but some Shigella may also grow.
