Agar powder (high strength and high transparency)
Agar powder (high strength and high transparency)
Agar, scientifically known as agarose and also called kanten (agar-agar), seaweed jelly, gelatin powder, gel, stone flower jelly, yancai extract, agar powder, kanten, or large vegetable silk, is a type of plant gum composed of agarose and agaropectin. It is commonly made from marine products such as Gracilaria, Gelidiaceae, and Jiangli. It is a colorless, shapeless solid used as a thickener, gelling agent, suspending agent, emulsifier, stabilizer, and preservative. The most useful characteristic of agar is the large difference between its gelling temperature and melting temperature. It only begins to melt in water when heated to 95°C, and the melted solution must cool to 40°C before it starts to gel, making it the best gelling agent for preparing solid culture media. In plant tissue culture media, the usual concentration is about 0.7% (depending on the agar strength), while for microbial culture media it is generally around 1.5%. For slightly acidic (pH below 6) microbial media, about 2% is typically used, and it cannot gel at pH below 5.
