M9 Minimal Medium

M9 minimal medium is a completely defined synthetic medium with precisely quantified ingredients, commonly used for culturing Escherichia coli in molecular biology and protein structure studies. It is suitable for all wild-type E. coli strains; for nutrient-deficient E. coli strains, the corresponding nutrients need to be added. M9 medium can be used to maintain positive selective pressure for bacteria carrying plasmids encoding amino acids and vitamins and is also commonly used for the expression of isotopically labeled recombinant proteins.
