MFC broth

MFC broth is a selective identification medium, which is specially used for detecting and counting fecal coliforms in water, especially for membrane filtration. Its high selectivity comes from dye rosolic acid and bile salts, which can effectively inhibit the growth of Gram-positive bacteria and non-fecal total coliforms. The medium uses lactose as fermentation substrate. Typical fecal coliforms ferment lactose to produce acid at high temperature of 44.5℃, which makes the colonies appear unique blue; Colonies that do not ferment lactose are colorless or gray. This culture medium is an important tool to distinguish fecal pollution from non-fecal pollution in water hygiene.
