m-TEC agar

M-TEC agar is a selective medium, which is specially used for the detection and counting of fecal coliforms (thermotolerant coliforms) in water. It contains nutrients such as peptone and yeast extract, and bile salts and other inhibitors are added, which can effectively inhibit the growth of non-target bacteria. Bromocresol purple in the culture medium is used as an acid-base indicator. When fecal coliforms ferment lactose to produce acid at a high temperature of 44.5℃, the colonies are yellow and easy to identify. Combined with membrane filtration technology, this culture medium can realize rapid quantitative analysis by counting yellow colonies, which is one of the standard methods in microbiological examination of water quality.
