Honda's toxic broth
Elek's culture medium is a special immune agar medium for detecting whether Corynebacterium diphtheriae produces diphtheria toxin. Its ingredients include peptone, maltose and amino acids, etc., aiming at effectively promoting the growth of diphtheria bacillus and stimulating its toxin secretion. During detection, the filter paper strips soaked with diphtheria antitoxin are obliquely inserted into agar, and the strains to be detected are inoculated and cultured. If the strain produces toxin, the toxin meets the antitoxin diffused by filter paper at a specific ratio, and a clear white precipitation line will appear in agar, which is a positive result. This test is a classical immunological method for identifying toxigenic diphtheria bacillus in vitro, with high specificity.
