Urease agar base
Urease agar base is a biochemical test medium for identifying bacterial urease activity. Its basic nutrients provide support for bacterial growth, the key reaction substrate is high concentration of urea, and phenol red is used as acid-base indicator. The experimental principle is that some bacteria (such as Proteus, Helicobacter pylori, etc.) can produce urease and decompose urea into ammonia and carbon dioxide. The accumulation of ammonia leads to the increase of pH value of the culture medium, which makes the phenol red indicator change from original light yellow or orange to bright pink or purplish red. The culture medium is usually inclined to increase the contact surface with air, and its color changes rapidly and obviously. It is an important tool for identification of Enterobacteriaceae bacteria and preliminary screening of Helicobacter pylori.
