Hektoen enteric agar
HE agar (Hektoen Enteric Agar) is a separation medium with high selectivity and high discrimination, which is mainly used to separate intestinal pathogens such as Shigella and Salmonella from clinical samples such as feces. Its selectivity comes from inhibitors such as bile salts, sodium thiosulfate and ammonium ferric citrate, which can effectively inhibit the growth of gram-positive bacteria and some non-pathogenic intestinal bacteria. The identification system is based on three sugar alcohols (salicin, lactose and sucrose) and bromothymol blue/acid reddish indicator. Salmonella and Shigella that do not ferment sugar alcohol form blue-green to transparent colonies; Fermentable Enterobacteriaceae bacteria (such as Escherichia coli) form orange to orange-red colonies. The colony center of strains producing hydrogen sulfide (such as some Salmonella) is black.
