Shigella enrichment broth
Shigella enrichment broth is a liquid medium for selective proliferation of Shigella. Because the content of Shigella in the sample is low and it is sensitive to inhibitors, the medium adopts a mild selection strategy. Its basic ingredients provide nutrition, and the key selective inhibitor is bile salt or neomycin with low concentration, which aims to partially inhibit the growth of associated miscellaneous bacteria such as Escherichia coli without excessively inhibiting the damaged Shigella. At the same time, the pH of the culture medium is usually adjusted to neutral and alkaline to facilitate the recovery of Shigella. After enrichment culture, it is transferred to selective plate (such as XLD agar) for separation. This step is a key pretreatment step to improve the detection rate of Shigella in feces or food samples.
