Bile sulfur emulsion agar (DHL)
Bile sulfur milk agar (DHL) is a selective identification medium for separating Salmonella and Shigella. Its selectivity mainly depends on bile salts and sodium thiosulfate, which can inhibit gram-positive bacteria and some coliforms. The identification system is based on lactose, sucrose and neutral red indicator. Bacteria that ferment lactose or sucrose (such as Escherichia coli) produce acid and form red or orange colonies. Salmonella and Shigella, which do not ferment these two sugars, use peptone to produce alkali, forming transparent or translucent colorless colonies. In addition, Salmonella usually produces hydrogen sulfide, which makes the colony center black or black spots, which can be distinguished from Shigella. The culture medium is widely used in clinic and food inspection.
