WS agar
WS agar (Wilson and Blair's Agar) is a highly selective identification medium, which is mainly used for the separation of Salmonella, especially Salmonella typhi. Its strong selectivity comes from bismuth sulfite and brilliant green, and it can strongly inhibit miscellaneous bacteria such as Escherichia coli and gram-positive bacteria. Salmonella can reduce bismuth sulfite to bismuth sulfide, making typical colonies appear black or brown with metallic luster. The medium around the colony is usually darkened by reduction. The colony characteristics of Salmonella typhi are particularly typical, which are black, flat and have metal rings at the edges. This culture medium is highly specific for the separation of Salmonella, especially Salmonella typhi, and it is one of the classic methods for the detection of feces, food and other samples.
