Phenol red brilliant green agar
Phenol red brilliant green agar is a solid medium for selective separation and preliminary identification of Salmonella. Its selectivity mainly depends on brilliant green and dye phenol red, which can effectively inhibit the growth of gram-positive bacteria and most coliforms and other miscellaneous bacteria, while allowing salmonella to develop. Peptone and yeast extract in the culture medium provide nitrogen source, carbon source and vitamins; Lactose and sucrose are fermentation substrates; Phenol red as pH indicator. Typical Salmonella does not ferment lactose and sucrose, the colony is transparent, yellowish or pink, and the color of the surrounding culture medium remains unchanged (red/alkaline); On the contrary, the bacteria that can ferment and produce acid make the colony yellow and the surrounding culture medium yellow. Therefore, the culture medium can be quickly screened by colony morphology and color change.
