Lactose broth medium

Lactose broth culture medium is a basic liquid culture medium, which is mainly used for coliform estimation test (multi-tube fermentation method) and enrichment culture in food and water quality hygiene detection. Its basic components are peptone and beef paste, which provide rich nitrogen sources, vitamins and growth factors. Lactose is the only fermentable carbon source. Bromocresol violet is used as pH indicator. If the sample contains coliforms, they ferment lactose to produce acid and gas, which leads to the culture medium changing from purple to yellow, and bubbles are collected in Duhan's tubules, which is a positive result. The culture medium is simple in composition and intuitive in reaction, and it is a key reagent for preliminarily judging indicator bacteria of fecal contamination in environmental and food microbial detection. For pathogenic bacteria (such as Salmonella) that do not ferment lactose, this culture medium can also be used as pre-enrichment bacteria to promote their recovery.
