EF-18 agar is a selective chromogenic medium, which is specially used for the separation and identification of Enterobacter sakazakii (now known as Cronobacillus) in food and environmental samples. Its selectivity mainly depends on the combination of antibiotics such as vancomycin and cefsulodin, which can effectively inhibit the growth of gram-positive bacteria and most gram-negative miscellaneous bacteria. The chromogenic substrate in the culture medium is the key. The unique α -glucosidase of Enterobacter sakazakii can decompose the substrate and release the germ, which makes the colony appear typical blue-green, while other colonies are usually colorless or different colors, thus achieving rapid and intuitive preliminary identification. In addition, the components of the culture medium also provide necessary nutrients for the target bacteria.
