BPL agar

BPL agar is a selective medium for the isolation and identification of Listeria, and its name comes from its key antibacterial components-polymyxin B, phenylethanol and lithium salt. These components can effectively inhibit the growth of most Gram-negative bacteria and Gram-positive bacteria, but have weak inhibitory effect on Listeria, thus forming selectivity. The culture medium contains aescin and ammonium ferric citrate, and Listeria can hydrolyze aescin and react with iron ions to form a characteristic black halo around the colony. The typical colony of Listeria monocytogenes is black with smooth surface and black halo. BPL agar is commonly used in food microbiological examination, which can initially screen suspicious Listeria colonies from complex samples, but it still needs further biochemical identification to confirm.
