Swarm agar
Swarm agar is a kind of nutrient agar with low hardness (usually 0.5%-0.7%), which is specially used to observe and study bacteria with swarm movement, such as Proteus mirabilis and some other Proteus and Serratia species. This unique movement pattern is characterized by periodic and concentric annular diffusion and growth of colonies from the inoculation point. Its low agar concentration provides a necessary physical wetting surface for mass surface migration driven by bacterial flagella. The basic nutrients in the culture medium (such as peptone and beef paste) support the vigorous growth of bacteria and provide energy for the phenomenon of group swimming. This culture medium is a classic tool for studying bacterial motility, biofilm and group behavior, and can also be used for preliminary estimation and identification of specific strains in clinical microbiology.
