G6PDH (EC 1.1.49) is widely present in animals, plants, microorganisms, and cultured cells. It is a key enzyme in the pentose phosphate pathway, catalyzing the oxidation of glucose-6-phosphate to glucose-6-phosphate lactone, while reducing NADP+ to NADPH, which is used for biosynthesis and maintaining the reducing state within cells. The level of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity can, to a certain extent, reflect the biosynthetic and antioxidant capacities of organisms.
