XOD (EC·1.17.3.2) catalyzes the oxidation of xanthine to uric acid and superoxide anions, and is one of the main sources of reactive oxygen species; it is also one of the key enzymes in nucleotide metabolism. XOD is mainly distributed in tissues such as the heart, lungs, and liver of mammals. When liver function is impaired, a large amount of XOD is released into the serum, which has specific significance for the diagnosis of liver damage.
