SOD (EC 1.15.1.1) is widely present in animals, plants, microorganisms, and cultured cells. It catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide anions to generate H₂O₂ and O₂. SOD is not only a superoxide anion-scavenging enzyme but also a major enzyme for H₂O₂ production, playing an important role in the biological antioxidant system.
