Brilliant green sulfapyridine agar (BGS)
Brilliant green sulfapyridine agar (BGS)
Brilliant green sulfapyridine agar (BGS) is a highly selective solid medium for separating Salmonella, especially typhoid and paratyphoid Salmonella. Its selectivity mainly depends on the synergistic bacteriostatic effect of brilliant green and sulfapyridine, which can strongly inhibit the growth of most intestinal miscellaneous bacteria and gram-positive bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Proteus. Peptone and lactose in the culture medium provide basic nutrition, and phenol red is used as acid-base indicator. Salmonella that does not ferment lactose forms red to pink, transparent colonies, and the color of the surrounding culture medium remains unchanged (red/alkaline); However, a few bacteria that can grow will produce acid and turn yellow if lactose is fermented. BGS agar has excellent separation effect on Salmonella typhi, but its strong selectivity may also inhibit some damaged non-Salmonella typhi, so it is often used in conjunction with other media.
