Deoxycholic acid citrate agar
Deoxycholic acid citrate agar is a selective solid medium for isolating intestinal pathogenic bacteria, especially salmonella and Shigella. Its selectivity mainly depends on deoxycholate and citrate, which can inhibit the growth of non-target bacteria such as gram-positive bacteria and most coliforms. Peptone and beef paste in the culture medium provide nutrition, and lactose and neutral red indicator are used to identify fermentation characteristics. Lactose-fermenting colonies (such as Escherichia coli) are red or pink due to acid production, accompanied by bile salt precipitation circles; However, pathogenic bacteria that do not ferment lactose (such as Salmonella) use peptone to produce alkali and form colorless and transparent colonies. This medium has strong selectivity and is one of the classic media for the separation of intestinal pathogens.
