Crystal violet neutral bile salt glucose agar (VRBGA)
Crystal violet neutral bile salt glucose agar (VRBGA)
Crystal violet neutral red bile salt glucose agar (VRBGA) is a selective solid medium for detecting coliforms and Escherichia coli in food and medicine. Its selectivity depends on crystal violet and bile salts, which can effectively inhibit the growth of gram-positive bacteria. Peptone and yeast extract in the culture medium provide nutrition, lactose is the fermentable carbon source, and neutral red is the pH indicator. The coliform colonies that ferment lactose to produce acid are red, and pink halo is formed due to the precipitation of bile salts around them. Colonies that do not ferment lactose are colorless and transparent. VRBGA is especially suitable for colony counting by filter membrane method, and it is one of the key media used in food hygiene microbiology inspection in international standards (such as ISO), which can effectively indicate potential fecal contamination.
