Baird-Parker agar foundation
Baird-Parker agar is an efficient selective medium, which is specially used for the separation and counting of Staphylococcus aureus. Its selectivity depends on potassium tellurite and glycine. Potassium tellurite is reduced by Staphylococcus aureus to form black colonies and can inhibit most miscellaneous bacteria. Glycine and lithium chloride synergistically enhanced the inhibitory effect. Egg yolk potassium tellurite solution is the key additive, which provides the reaction substrate for lecithin and lipase. Typical Staphylococcus aureus colonies are black, smooth and convex, surrounded by clear opaque circles (lecithin enzyme reaction) and transparent circles (lipase reaction). The culture medium is highly specific, widely used in microbiological examination of food and cosmetics, and is one of the international standard methods.
