Staphylococcal enrichment broth
Staphylococcal enrichment broth is a liquid culture medium for selectively enriching staphylococci. Its selectivity mainly depends on the high concentration of sodium chloride (usually 7.5%-10%). This hypertonic environment can effectively inhibit the growth of most non-salt-tolerant bacteria, while Staphylococcus can grow under this condition. The components in the culture medium, such as tryptone and yeast extract, provide rich nitrogen sources, vitamins and growth factors, and support the rapid propagation of staphylococcus. In addition, sodium pyruvate is often added to promote the recovery of damaged staphylococcus. This culture medium is mainly used for enrichment of pathogenic staphylococci (such as Staphylococcus aureus) in food, cosmetics and other samples before detection. After 18-24 hours of culture, the positive rate of subsequent selective plate separation can be greatly improved.
