Staphylococcus selective agar
Staphylococcus selective agar (such as Baird-Parker agar) is a highly selective solid medium for isolating and identifying pathogenic staphylococcus, especially Staphylococcus aureus. Its selectivity depends on lithium chloride and glycine, and it can inhibit most gram-negative bacteria and gram-positive miscellaneous bacteria. The key additive is yolk potassium tellurite emulsion suspension, in which potassium tellurite is reduced by Staphylococcus aureus to form black colonies and inhibit non-target bacteria; Egg yolk is used to detect lecithin enzyme (producing opaque precipitation circle) and lipase (producing transparent circle). Typical Staphylococcus aureus colonies are black, smooth and convex, with clear halo around them. The culture medium has high specificity and is one of the international standard methods for microbiological examination of food and medicine.
