V-J agar
V-J agar is a selective medium for isolating and culturing Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Its formula is based on peptone, yeast extract powder and other nutrients, and high concentration of sodium chloride (usually 2-3%) is added to meet the halophilic growth demand of Vibrio. The key selective components are bile salts and specific antibiotics (such as polymyxin B), which can effectively inhibit the growth of non-Vibrio-like miscellaneous bacteria. Indicator systems (such as bromothymol blue and thymol blue) in the culture medium can be preliminarily identified according to the characteristics of sugar fermentation. Typical Vibrio parahaemolyticus forms blue or green colonies because it does not ferment sucrose; While the colonies that ferment sucrose are yellow. The culture medium has strong specificity and is a common tool for detecting the pathogen in aquatic products and clinical specimens.
