Magenta sodium sulfite agar
Magenta sodium sulfite agar is a selective solid medium for detecting coliform bacteria in water, especially for membrane filtration detection of drinking water standards. Its selectivity depends on basic fuchsin and sodium sulfite, which can inhibit the growth of some non-target bacteria. Lactose in the culture medium is the only fermentable carbon source. Typical coliform colonies ferment lactose to produce acid, which reacts with sodium sulfite to reduce magenta to form metallic crimson or copper-red colonies. In addition, colonies such as Enterobacter aerogenes are often pink or dark in center color, while non-coliform colonies are usually colorless. The culture medium is sensitive in reaction and easy to interpret, and it is one of the classic methods in environmental water quality hygiene monitoring.
