Crystal purple neutral red bile salt broth

Crystal violet neutral red bile salt broth is a liquid selective medium for detecting coliforms in food and water. Its selectivity depends on crystal violet and bile salts, which can effectively inhibit the growth of gram-positive bacteria. Peptone and lactose in the culture medium provide nitrogen source and fermentable carbon source respectively, and neutral red is used as pH indicator. If the sample contains coliforms, they will ferment lactose to produce acid, which will cause the culture medium to change from purple to yellow and produce gas (which can be observed in Duhan's tubule). This culture medium is a key part of the maximum likelihood method (MPN method). It is one of the classic methods for food hygiene and drinking water safety monitoring to qualitatively and quantitatively evaluate coliforms by observing the phenomenon of acid production and gas production.
