CCFA agar foundation
CCFA agar (cycloserine-ceftrimethoprim-fructose-yolk agar) is a highly selective medium, which is specially used for the separation of Clostridium difficile. Its selectivity depends on the antibiotics cycloserine and ceftrimethoprim, which can strongly inhibit most intestinal flora and gram-negative bacteria. Clostridium difficile can use fructose as the main carbon source and produce acid to make the neutral red indicator turn red, so the colony is yellow. The yolk in the culture medium is used to detect lecithin and lipase, and opaque halo or pearl luster can appear around the positive colonies. In addition, typical colonies have a special smell of horse manure. CCFA agar is the first choice for isolating and identifying the anaerobic bacteria from fecal samples.
