MLGA agar
MLGA agar (Modified Lactose Gelatin Agar) is a selective medium for detecting and counting coliforms and Escherichia coli in water, which is often combined with membrane filtration. Its selective component sodium dodecyl sulfate can inhibit the growth of non-target bacteria. Lactose in the culture medium is fermentable carbon source, and bromocresol violet is used as acid-base indicator. Typical coliforms ferment lactose to produce acid, which makes the colony yellow. It is unique in that it contains gelatin. If there is Escherichia coli, the gelatinase produced by it can liquefy gelatin and form a clear transparent circle around the colony, thus distinguishing it from other coliforms (such as Klebsiella) that do not liquefy gelatin. The culture medium can realize one-step qualitative and quantitative detection.
