MPYG medium

MPYG culture medium is a general liquid culture medium with rich nutrition, which is especially suitable for the cultivation and enrichment of anaerobic bacteria and fastidious bacteria in complex environments such as oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract. Its name comes from the core components: brain-heart infusion (which provides rich peptides, nucleotides and vitamins), tryptone, yeast extract and glucose. These components together provide comprehensive nitrogen source, carbon source, energy and necessary growth factors for microorganisms. The culture medium usually adds cysteine as reducing agent and cooperates with anaerobic conditions (such as filling oxygen-free gas) to support the growth of strict anaerobic bacteria. MPYG culture medium is not highly selective, but it can effectively promote the recovery and proliferation of a variety of difficult-to-cultivate microorganisms, and is often used in microbial ecology research or as a pre-enrichment solution before the detection of specific pathogens.
