Improved Giolitti and Cantoni broth

The improved Giolitti and Cantoni broth is a liquid culture medium for coagulase-positive staphylococci (especially Staphylococcus aureus) in selectively enriched food. Its selectivity comes from high concentration of sodium chloride (10%) and added potassium tellurite, which can effectively inhibit the growth of most salt-tolerant bacteria. Tryptone and yeast extract in the culture medium provide rich nutrition, while sodium pyruvate helps to repair damaged staphylococcal cells. The culture is based on aerobic culture at 37℃ for 24-48 hours. Potassium tellurite can be reduced by staphylococcus to blacken the culture medium, and its toxicity to coagulase-positive strains is weak, thus playing a selective role. This culture medium can effectively improve the detection rate of target bacteria in low pollution samples, which is an important step to increase bacteria in food safety monitoring.
