Manitol salt agar
Mannitol high salt agar is a selective solid medium for separating and identifying pathogenic staphylococci. Its high concentration of sodium chloride (usually 7.5%) can inhibit most non-salt tolerant bacteria, while staphylococcus can grow. Mannitol is the only fermentable carbon source and phenol red is the pH indicator. Pathogenic staphylococcus (such as Staphylococcus aureus) can ferment mannitol to produce acid, which changes the culture medium around the colony from red to yellow. Non-pathogenic staphylococci do not ferment mannitol, and the color of the culture medium remains unchanged. The culture medium can effectively screen pathogenic bacteria through the dual characteristics of salt tolerance and mannitol fermentation, and is a common tool for food and clinical specimen inspection.
